Disney+ Hong Kong Guide
Updated in September 2025

Disney+ launched in Hong Kong on 16 Nov 2021 and has quickly become a major streaming option alongside Netflix, HBO Go and Apple TV. As Disney’s own platform, you’ll find content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star, with 1,200+ movies and 16,000+ episodes available. I’ve been a paying user for a while — below is a practical, no-nonsense review. If you’re wondering whether a specific title is on Disney+, drop a comment at the end.

What’s New on Disney+

This flash sale aligns with fresh releases — ideal timing if you’re joining now:

  • Live-action Lilo & Stitch (3 Sep)
  • K-drama Tempest (10 Sep)
  • The Last Dance Extended Cut (12 Sep)
  • Pixar’s new original Elio (24 Sep)

Recent trending titles:

  • Alien: Earth
  • The Twelve Apostles
  • Homebound
  • Thunderbolts*, and more

Spotlight: Live-Action “Lilo & Stitch” (From 3 Sep)

The beloved Lilo & Stitch gets a 2025 live-action remake. A lonely Hawaiian girl, Lilo, bonds with a runaway blue alien experiment — a heartwarming story about family, empathy and love, with faithful recreations of classic scenes. Funny, touching and family-friendly.

Spotlight: K-Drama “Tempest” (From 10 Sep)

A star-studded thriller mixing espionage, action and political intrigue. Jun Ji-hyun plays a world-renowned diplomat entangled in an assassination plot, teaming up with a mysterious operative (Kang Dong-won) to unravel a conspiracy rocking the Korean peninsula. Fast-paced and binge-worthy.

Spotlight: “The Last Dance” — Extended Cut (From 12 Sep)

Hong Kong’s box-office hit returns with 13 minutes of never-before-seen footage. Set in the funeral industry, it delves into family, life and mortality; Dayo Wong’s “Do-sang” is even more fleshed out, alongside a powerhouse ensemble. A must for fans of modern Hong Kong cinema.

Pixar’s “Elio” (From 24 Sep)

A fresh original adventure about alien kids accidentally sent to Earth who befriend local children and embark on a heartfelt journey. Whimsical, imaginative and great for families.

Supported Devices

TV: Apple TV, Chromecast/Google TV, Android TV OS, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Hisense
Desktop: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (and legacy IE for some users)
Mobile/Tablet: Android phones/tablets, iPhone/iPad/iPod touch
Consoles: PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Series X|S

Video Quality — Is 4K Available?

Downloads offer three presets (High/Medium/Standard). On desktop browsers, playback tops out at HD (1080p) even on a 4K monitor. For true 4K, use the Disney+ TV app on a supported smart TV/box (or cast via Chromecast/AirPlay on supported hardware). Many titles support HDR, Dolby Vision and IMAX Enhanced (1.90:1 on select Marvel films) for a noticeably larger image and punchier visuals.

Bottom line: you’ll get 4K on TV apps, not in desktop browsers. Quality selection is mostly automatic.

GroupWatch

Disney+ includes built-in GroupWatch. Up to 7 people (all must be subscribers) can sync playback across iPhone/Android/TV/desktop, pause/seek together and react in real-time. Share a link and watch in sync from anywhere.

Using Disney+ Abroad

Sign in overseas with your Hong Kong account and the catalogue auto-adjusts to the local region. The US library, for example, lacks “Star,” while the UK library has Star but with different selections. Language options also vary by region.

Audio & Subtitles

Disney+ offers ~20 audio languages and ~28 subtitle options. You can adjust subtitle size, color and opacity. Many titles include Cantonese dubbing; even when they don’t, Traditional Chinese subtitles are widely available — great for families.

Disney+ vs Netflix — Different Strengths

Netflix and Disney+ target different needs. Disney+ is the home for Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Star Wars and National Geographic. Netflix shines with buzzy originals like Emily in Paris, The Queen’s Gambit, Squid Game, You, Black Mirror and strong documentary output. If you’re into Nat Geo staples like Air Crash Investigation, Dog Whisperer, Brain Games and Locked Up Abroad, Disney+ is the place.

Great for Kids — What Cartoons Are There?

For families, Disney+ is excellent: Disney and Pixar classics with Cantonese or English audio plus Chinese/English subtitles. My little one went from watching in Cantonese first to rewatching in English — genuinely helpful for language learning. Titles like Cars, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Aladdin and Disney Junior shows are easy wins.

Any Drawbacks?

  • Content discovery could be better. Beyond the main categories, it’s not always easy to browse by “Hong Kong cinema,” specific stars, or release year. New and old titles can be mixed in feeds, so you’ll sometimes need to search directly.

Old-School Hong Kong Movies?

If your primary goal is classic Hong Kong cinema, Netflix may have a broader selection of older titles. Disney+ focuses on Disney brands and mainstream hits. That said, recent Hong Kong films do appear on Disney+, and the local catalogue has been improving month by month. Availability changes regularly.

September 2025 update: Disney+ is clearly investing in the Hong Kong market with more local additions each month. See the screencap below for a snapshot of available titles.
